Women at work, European Agency for Safety and Health at work (EU-OSHA) seminar, December 9, 2010:
ETUCE was invited to this event as an occupational health and safety expert to participate in the debate related to the subject of women at work. This is of particular importance to the ETUCE as raising awareness of gender equality amongst our member organisation is one of the specific objectives in the work of the ETUCE. As this seminar more specifically revolved around women at work in relations to the issue of health, which combines two of the working areas of the ETUCE.
A series of short presentations focused on research, practice and policy implications and lead to discussion amongst the participants on the concerns. The seminar also provided the participants an opportunity to suggest some priorities for research, actions and some concrete ways forward for occupational health and safety strategies.
Previous research carried out by EU-OSHA has shown that inequality both inside and outside the workplace can have a negative effect on the health and safety of women at work and thus have an impact on their productivity. A major problem within the research in the field of safety and health at work, is that “emerging” female professions to a wide extend are not well covered in data collections. For this reason, and many others, EU-OSHA, as well as ETUCE wishes to continue their work to improve conditions for women at work.

Mediterranean Institute of Gender Studies: IGS Launches Information Campaign on Gender-based Violence among Young People
Within the framework of the Daphne III project ‘Perspective’, the Mediterranean Institute of Gender Studies [MIGS] is launching an awareness raising campaign on gender-based violence in interpersonal relationships. The main aim of the campaign is to inform young people and the general public on the different forms of gender based violence as experienced in intimate and other interpersonal adolescent relationships. The campaign with the main slogan ‘Violence is never justified! Let’s build healthy relationships today!’ aims to challenge the culture of ‘victim blaming’ that places responsibility for acts of violence on the victim rather than the perpetrator.  It also calls on young people to assume responsibility and take action to combat those behaviors and social perceptions that form the root cause of gender-based violence, and to build healthy relationships based on mutual respect, tolerance, and equality.

The media campaign consists of radio and TV spots that will be aired during November 2010, as well as the production of promotional material that will be disseminated among secondary school students and youth groups.  During this period MIGS will also be visiting secondary schools in Nicosia to inform and sensitize students on gender-based violence and its devastating effects on their current and future relationships.

The campaign’s media sponsors are Radio Proto and To Periodiko.

Tragedy: Worker dies during demolition at boarding school.
A building worker was killed while demolishing a building on a Shropshire boarding school. The worker was suffocated when the roof, which weighed 2.4 tonnes, fell on top of him. Four other men, who were also inside the building survived without serious injuries due to the chance positioning of a dumper which was parked inside part of the building, creating an escape route. The school failed to make any reasonable enquiries into the competence of the men to undertake the demolition work prior to the work beginning and has now been fined £25,000. Read more>>
